Homemade Dog Food: Cooking with Love and Purpose

At Ruby Moodles and Poodles Sydney, food is more than just nutrition, it’s an act of love.
I’ve always believed that our dogs deserve meals that are wholesome, nourishing, and made with the same care we’d give to any member of the family.

That’s why I personally cook dinner for my dogs, and they have dry food for breakefast and lunch.
They absolutely love it, tails wagging, bowls empty, and hearts full.

🥩 My Homemade Dog Recipe

Here’s a peek into what I often prepare for my dogs at home:

1 kg of chunk beef

1 whole chicken, boiled and then shredded

A few chicken livers for added nutrients

Rice, cooked in the same broth for extra flavour

Vegetables such as carrots, pumpkin, zucchini, sweet potatoes, peas, spinach, or whatever I have on hand in the refrigerator

A touch of coconut oil for a shiny coat and healthy skin

Turmeric, a natural anti-inflammatory

Chia seeds and oats, to support digestion and provide energy

Once everything is cooked, I mix it together, warm, comforting, and packed with nutrients.
It’s simple, natural, and delicious for them.

🌿 The Benefits of Cooking for Your Dogs

Cooking at home has so many benefits beyond the joy it brings:

You control the ingredients, no fillers, preservatives, or low-quality meat.

You can adapt the recipe to your dog’s needs (more protein for active dogs, lighter meals for seniors).

You provide fresh nutrients that support their immune system, coat, and digestion.

You build a bond — dogs truly sense the love behind a home-cooked meal.

🦴 The Power of Ingredients

Each ingredient adds something special:

Beef & chicken → Excellent sources of protein and amino acids for muscle strength.

Chicken liver → High in iron, B vitamins, and essential fatty acids.

Turmeric → Helps reduce inflammation and supports joint health.

Chia seeds & oats → Promote healthy digestion and balanced energy.

Coconut oil → Keeps the coat shiny and supports brain function.

Vegetables → Provide fiber, antioxidants, and vitamins A, C, and K.

And let’s not forget one of my favourite additions:
👉 A spoon of natural yoghurt (without sugar or flavouring).
It helps maintain healthy gut bacteria and improves digestion, especially good after antibiotics or for sensitive stomachs.

🍽️ Homemade Food + Quality Kibble = The Perfect Balance

While home-cooked food is wonderful, I also believe in balance.
There are days when high-quality dog kibble is practical — especially brands that use real meat, natural fats, and no fillers or by-products.

A good combination of fresh homemade meals and premium dry food gives your dog variety, nutrition, and a little excitement at mealtime.

When choosing kibble, look for:

Meat as the first ingredient

No artificial colours or preservatives

Whole grains or vegetables

Australian-made products whenever possible

💛 Final Thoughts

Cooking for your dogs is more than feeding them, it’s nurturing them from the inside out.
It’s knowing exactly what goes into their bowls and seeing them thrive with health and joy.

Whether you prepare your own meals or choose a trusted premium kibble, what matters most is quality, balance, and love.
Because a happy, healthy dog starts with what’s in their bowl, and in your heart.
